The Virgin Mary Church in Harput
Harput Meryem Ana Kilisesi içindeki Süryanice taş tablette yazıldığına göre M.S. 179 yılında inşa edildi.The Virgin Mary Church in Harput was built in the year 179 according to the stone-tablet written in Syriac, which is found in the church.
Literatürde Bnay Bauth manastırı olarak da isimlendirilmektedir.Metropolitlik merkezidir ve bu durum 1924 yılına kadar devam etmiştir.Patrik altıncı Atanasios Bar Kitre 1147-1150 yılları arasında (Harput metropolitinin ölmesi nedeniyle) Patriklik makamına Meryem Ana Kilisesinde üç yıl devam etmiştir.Meryem Ana Kilisesi 1264-1266 tarihleri arasında iki yıl da Dioskoros Teodoros Mafiryanlık merkezi olmuştur.Asırlardan beri 15 Ağustos Meryem Ana gününde çevre illerden gelenlerle birlikte festival şeklinde kutlanma geleneği olan bir kilisedir.Metropolit Harputlu Dioskoros Teodoros 1250 yılında kaligrafik yazıyla ve resimlerle deri üzerine renkli olarak yaptığı İncili, Meryem Ana Kilisesi’ne hediye etmiştir. Bu İncil türünün nadide bir örneğidir.According to the literature, the church is also known as the Bnay Bauth Monastery.

Patriarch Athanasius VI Bar Kitre held the Virgin Mary Church as his Patriarchate Office for three years year in 1147-1150, due to the death of the Metropolitan of Harput.
The Virgin Mary Church has served as the office of Mafiryan (Catholicos) Dioscoros
Theodoros for two years in 1264-1266.
According to the church tradition, 15 August has been celebrated for many centuries as the festival of the Virgin Mary, when pilgrims visit from neighboring provinces.
The Metropolitan of Harput, Dioscoros Theodoros, donated a Bible to the Virgin Mary Church in 1250, which he compiled in calligraphic writing with coloured pictures on the skin. This type of Bible is very rare.
Meryem Ana Kilisesi özellikle Husoyoları, Tören Ritüelleri ve Katolihileri bolca üreten bir kilisedir. Günümüzde Elazığ Kilisesi’nde okunan kendine has Husoyaları ve Katolihileri vardır.
Mucizevi bir Kilise olarak tarihe geçmiştir. Özellikle sinir hastalıkları ve kadın hastalıklarına şifa veren mucizevi bir kilisedir.
Harput Meryem Ana Kilisesi, Süryani Kilisesi’nin kuruluşundan beri kullandığı makamları günümüze kadar taşıyan makam yönünden zengin bir yapıya sahiptir. Günümüzde okunan seksen tane katolihisi-övgü duası vardır.
1936 yılından beri vakıf olarak yönetilen kilisenin günümüzde yedi kişilik bir yönetim kurulu, bir rahibi, yedi şemması vardır. Metropoliti, Adıyaman ve Çevre İller Metropoliti olan Mor Ğriğoriyos Melki ÜREK’TİR.
Kilise 1134-1135 yılında bir onarım, 1950 yılında bir onarım ve 2000 yılında bir onarım geçirmiştir.
Süryani Mahallesi içinde bulunan kilisenin 1922 yılına kadar devam eden bir okulu bulunmaktaydı.
Many Husoye (pardon prayers), Ceremonial Rituals and Liturgical Songs have been compiled in the Virgin Mary Church. For this reasons, the today’s Elazığ Church possesses many unique Husoye and Liturgical Songs.
This church has been noted as healing in history. The church is especially known for for healing mental diseases, and women who are in pain.
The Virgin Mary Church of the Syriac Orthodox in Harput has preserved its melodies from the day it was founded until today. It is therefore rich in ecclesiastical hymns and songs.
Today, there are eighty different melodies in its prayers.
The church has been managed as a foundation since 1936, and this is formed by a board of seven persons, a monk and seven deacons. Today, it is under the auspices of the Mor Ğriğoriyos Melki ÜREK, Metropolitan of Adiyaman and its Environs.
The church was restored in 1134-1135, and was repaired in 1950, with a further restoration in 2000 under the sponsorship of Dr. İshak Tanoğlu and his family.
The church, which is in the Syriac quarter, had a school which continued until 1922.
Ayrıca 1908-1914 yılları arasında yayımlanan Süryanice ve Osmanlıca bir de gazete bilinmektedir.
Günümüzde Harput Meryem Ana Kilisesi’nin Süryani Büyüklerinden İnciler, Mor Afrem, Mor İshok, Abul Faraç ve Mor Yakup adlı beş adet yayımlanmış Türkçe eseri vardır.
The Church published a newspaper in the Syriac and Ottoman languages in 1908-1914.
The Virgin Mary Church of the Syriac Orthodox in Harput has recently published five key authors’ important works, which are considered as pearls, namely the work of Mor Afrem, Mor Isaac, Abul Faraç and Mor Jacob in the Turkish language, by Sarah Tanoğlu, the daughter of Dr. İshak Tanoğlu.
Metropolit Mor Ğriğoriyos Melki ÜREK yönetiminde her yıl 15 Ağustos Meryem Ana gününde Kilisede ayin, Harput’ta yemek, Elazığ’da kültürel program şeklinde Elazığ, Adıyaman, Malatya, İstanbul ve Mardin’den gelen katılımcılarla gerçekleşen bir de festivali vardır.
Activities are organized under the management of Metropolitan Mor Ğriğoriyos Melki Ürek in the Church of Virgin Mary in Harput. This is celebrated on 15 August, with a Eucharist in the Virgin Mary Church, succeeding with a meal in Harput, and a following cultural program of activities in Elazığ, with the participating faithful from Elazığ, Adıyaman, Malatya, İstanbul and Mardin.
